Right out of a true American story of rags to riches, Yankee Candle began in 1969.  It began as a Christmas present in South Hadley, MA.  Young Mike Kittredge made his mother a candle out of melted crayons.  He did so because he could not afford to buy her a gift.  Mike was very proud of his creation.  He showed it to a neighbor.  She liked it so much that she convinced him to sell her the candle.  He too the money to the store.  There he bought enough wax to make 2 more candles.  He made one for his mom and one to sell.  That small sale was all it took to launch Yankee Candle.

After a succession of ownership changes the company went public in 1999.  The candle line was first picked up by big box retailers Linen-N-Things and Bed, Bath and Beyond.  The brand is sold in all 50 states and in over 50 countries worldwide.
